1. Summary
Kana Aloud is designed to work without a Kana Aloud account, advertising, analytics, or a developer-operated learner database. The first release keeps study progress on the iPhone. Supported devices use Apple’s on-device Japanese speech recognition, with touch activities available as a fallback.
2. Microphone and speech practice
Kana Aloud requests microphone access when the learner starts an activity that requires a spoken kana, word, or pitch attempt.
- Spoken-answer recognition: on supported devices, Japanese answers use Apple’s on-device speech recognition. When that capability is unavailable, the app provides a touch fallback instead of requiring network recognition.
- Pitch coaching: pitch practice derives a relative contour from the current attempt locally and compares it with the displayed Tokyo Japanese reference pattern.
- No ActiveVision audio upload: Kana Aloud does not send microphone audio to ActiveVision or create an ActiveVision-hosted recording library. Temporary audio buffers end with the activity.
Listening and touch-choice activities can be used without granting microphone access.
3. Local study progress
Introduced kana, unit status, review scheduling, response history, skill measures, preferences, counters, and Pitch Ear progress are stored locally on the iPhone.
Version 1 does not share mutable learning state with Kanji Aloud and does not require iCloud or Game Center. Deleting Kana Aloud can delete local progress. If a later release introduces optional sync, this policy and the in-app explanation will be updated before that behavior ships.
4. Bundled reference audio
Selected Japanese reference prompts use audio prepared in advance with VOICEVOX Nemo and bundled with the app. The VOICEVOX engine and generation service do not run on the iPhone, receive learner audio, or receive study history. Other prompts may use Apple system audio or visual-only practice.
5. Information collected by ActiveVision
The planned first release has:
- no Kana Aloud account or Sign in with Apple flow;
- no advertising SDK;
- no analytics SDK;
- no developer-operated database or API for learner data;
- no sale of personal data.
If a learner contacts support by email or phone, ActiveVision receives the information that person chooses to provide and uses it to answer the request.
6. Retention and deletion
Local study data remains until the learner resets progress or deletes the app. Volatile microphone buffers end with the active analysis and are not retained as recordings. Support messages are retained only as reasonably necessary to answer and document the support request.
7. Your choices
Learners can use listening and choice activities without microphone access, disable microphone access in iPhone Settings, reset local study data using the release interface, delete the app, or choose what information to include in a support request.
8. Children
Kana Aloud is not designed to collect personal information from children. It does not include a developer account, advertising, behavioral analytics, or a developer-operated social network. The final App Store age-rating response will be confirmed against the shipping build.
9. Changes to this policy
Material changes will be published at this URL with a revised effective date. The policy, in-app disclosures, and App Store privacy answers will be updated together if app behavior changes.
